The Razzbulance has pulled into the station to unload this week’s liability for your Razzball fantasy baseball weekly injury report.
As you walk through the injuries, take note of how many oblique injuries show up on the list (SPOILER ALERT: there are seven). That will be an interesting trend to watch this season. Additionally, you will see a few COVID related additions to the list this week.
Let’s jump into the IL!
American League Injuries
Chicago White Sox
A.J. Pollock (OF): AJ Pollock was headed for paternity leave (which is a measly 3 days in the MLB!) but found himself on the 10-day IL after right hamstring tightness during the opening series against Detroit.
Javier Baez (SS): Baez is currently listed day-to-day with a thumb injury that has been affecting him since Opening Day. He is expected to return soon. Harold Castro has been playing shortstop in Baez’s place.
Javier Báez said he initially jammed thumb in Opening Day celebration, then jammed it again on a swing. X-rays negative. He’ll get treatment today and see if he can play tomorrow.

Robbie Grossman (OF): Grossman is out with a hip/groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. He has been taking batting practice and will likely not be in the line-up for a few days but could be available as needed. Daz Cameron was brought on to the taxi squad to bolster the outfield in Grossman’s absence.
Robbie Grossman is getting a full day of early work, shagging and BP. He’s not starting today but sounds like he could be available. “All signs are pointing in the right direction,” AJ Hinch said.

Jorge Alcala (RP): Alcala is out with elbow inflammation. He is on the 10-day IL.
Byron Buxton (DH): Buxton experienced an injury (again) and is now listed as day-to-day. The injury is currently described as “knee soreness” after Buxton slid awkwardly into second base. Stay tuned for an update on the extensiveness of the injury.

Alex Kirilloff (OF): Kirilloff is on the 10-day IL with wrist inflammation. However, he received a steroid injection in his right wrist and is not expected to be down long. Trevor Larnach is currently replacing Kirilloff.
Dean Kremer (SP): Kremer is on the 10-day IL with a strained oblique. Alexander Wells and Spencer Watkins will likely see more time in Kremer’s absence.
From Brandon Hyde:
– Dean Kremer (left oblique strain) to the 10-day injured list. Alexander Wells called up, Spencer Watkins selected.
— On Bruce Zimmermann starting the home opener: “A great story.”
– The left-field wall reminds him of PNC Park. He’s thankful for Austin Hays.

Tampa Bay Rays
JT Chargois (RP): The Rays are experiencing a strained muscle nightmare starting with JT Chargois who is on the 10-day IL with left oblique tightness.
Luis Patino (SP): Patino is experiencing a strained oblique that has landed him on the 10-day IL. .
Ryan Yarbrough (SP): Yarbrough has been added to the 10-day IL as a precautionary move with minor groin tightness. Tommy Romero and Ralph Garza Jr. have been added to the roster to support Rays pitching while Chargois, Patino, and Yarbrough are on the IL
Change that not a strain, just left oblique tightness for Chargois. Significant difference.

Toronto Blue Jays
Teoscar Hernandez (OF): Hernandez was added to the 10-day IL with a strained oblique. Gosuke Katoh will take Hernandez’s place in the interim.

Danny Jansen (C): Jansen is another victim of the strained oblique pandemic. Zack Collins will step in for Jansen while he is on the 10-day IL.
Los Angeles Angels
David Fletcher (SS): David Fletcher is on the 10-day IL with a strained hip. Andrew Velazquez has been playing at shortstop in Fletcher’s place.
Also on the injury front: David Fletcher is not in Texas. He’s working with Angels trainers in Anaheim and they’ll evaluate his progress when the team gets back.

Jose Quijada (RP): Quijada was placed on the 10-day IL with a strained oblique. Brian Moran will pitch in Quijada’s place.
Stephen Piscotty (OF): The A’s have placed Piscotty on the COVID-19-related injury list. Additionally, AJ Puk, Kirby Snead, and Austin Allen were added to a COVID restricted list for unvaccinated players who cannot enter Canada.
The A’s placed three players on the restricted list before the opener of their three-game series against the Blue Jays. They also placed outfielder Stephen Piscotty on the COVID-19-related injured list. https://t.co/9es6LgIkxX

Skye Bolt (OF): Bolt was added to the 10-day IL with a strained oblique.
Jon Gray (SP): Gray has been on the 10-day IL with a blister (middle finger). He will hopefully be back on April 19, but Matt Bush, Taylor Hearn, and Martin Perez may get more playing time until Gray is healed.
Spencer Howard to the IL with a fingernail/blister issue. The Rangers are now down two starters, but Jon Gray is hopeful to return for their game on April 19th. Until then:
Matt Bush, Taylor Hearn, Martin Perez are scheduled to start for Texas vs the Angels.
— Dave Funnell (@sportz_nutt51) April 15, 2022
Spencer Howard (SP): Howard is on the 10-day IL with a cracked fingernail/blister. Nick Snyder was activated to bolt the bullpen.
Dennis Santana (RP): Santana is out with flu-like symptoms which I have also seen listed as “COVID-19 Related”.
Rangers roster moves for today:
– RHP Garrett Richards activated from 10-day IL.
– RHP Nick Snyder recalled from Round Rock (AAA).
– RHP Spencer Howard placed on 10-day IL, retro to April 11, with cracked finger nail/blister.
— RHP Dennis Santana placed on COVID-19 Related IL.

Sergio Romo (RP): Romo is on the 10-day IL with shoulder inflammation. Matt Koch has been activated.
National League Injuries
John Means (SP): Means, who has been crushing it, is on the 10-day IL with a strained elbow for “a while”. Spenser Watkins, Chris Ellis, and Keegan Akins are three pitchers the Orioles will rely on in Means absence.
John Means’ elbow injury is concerning. Any elbow injury is concerning. But for someone like Means it is deflating. What’s also deflating is the O’s have no one to absorb innings if he’s out for a while. That’s a miscalculation from this winter. My column: https://t.co/SL5xyJN7du

New York Mets
Mark Canha (OF), Brandon Nimmo (OF): COVID-19 has decimated the Mets outfield, but hopefully Canha and Nimmo will return soon.
Taijuan Walker (SP): Walker is on the 10-day IL with shoulder bursitis, but he said that the injury is not serious and hopes to be back soon. Edwin Diaz replaced Walker.
And here’s Taijuan Walker on his shoulder injury, which he also described as not-that-serious: pic.twitter.com/IVEE4e5yde

Dee Strange-Gordon (INF/OF): Dee Strange-Gordon has been placed on the IL with “undisclosed COVID-19”. This was after he “killed” Travis D’Arnaud. Coincidence? You be the judge.

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 13, 2022
Mason Thompson (RP): Thompson is on the 10-day IL with a strained biceps.
Wilmer Difo (OF): So, this one isn’t technically an injury, but Wilmer Difo is listed as day-to-day with visa issues. This issue has been ongoing, but this update is recent.
Wilmer Difo has had some visa issues. He is still in the Dominican Republic. https://t.co/UtInpjQvgz
— Steve Gilbert (@SteveGilbertMLB) April 5, 2022
Luke Weaver (RP): Weaver is out on the 10-day IL with a flexor pronator strain. He will not throw at all for another 5 to 8 days.
San Diego Padres
Austin Adams (RP): Adams is on the 10-day IL with a strained forearm.
Blake Snell (SP): Snell is on the 10-day IL with a strained groin/adductor injury. Both Adams and Snell’s injuries are minor, but Mackenzie Gore has been called up to make his MLB debut in place of Snell.
Blake Snell is expected to go on the IL tomorrow. Bob Melvin said the Padres believe Snell’s adductor injury and Austin Adams’ forearm injury are mild. No official announcement yet on Friday, but MacKenzie Gore threw a bullpen yesterday.

Are there any other injury updates?
Unfortunately, Luke Jackson (SP and Delois Guerra (RP) will both be out a significant amount of time after Tommy John surgery.
That’s it for this week’s edition of Ambulance Chasers!
